About us

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is a multidisciplinary research and specialist organization that focuses on well-being at work, research, advisory services and training.

Together with our clients, we develop good work communities and safe working environments and support employee well-being.

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health is lead by the Director General,  Dr. Antti Koivula.

The main decision-making body of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health is its Board of Directors. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health appoints the members of the Board of Directors every three years.

In addition to the state, labour market organizations are represented in the Board of Directors. Chair of the Board of Directors is Kari Mäkilohiluoma from Kela.

There are about 530 employees in the Institute.

About half of Institute's activities are funded with the state’s budget funding and the other half with service income and external research funding.

Business activities

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health helps its clients to develop the health and work ability of their employees and safe work environments and communities that support well-being at work. 

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health provides 

  • laboratory services 
  • occupational hygiene services
  • development and consultation services
  • training and online coaching services and
  • patient services related to occupational medicine.

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health’s business activities are based on long-term multidisciplinary research and development work. The Institute also has decades of experience in continuous interaction with workplaces. The activities are independent and impartial.

Training

We offer a wide range of training on occupational well-being, leadership, occupational health, occupational safety, and occupational protection – topics we excel in and lead the way. Our expertise has been acquired through research in various projects closely related to working life.

Research

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health conducts approximately 130 research projects annually. Our research focuses on occupational well-being and work ability, changes in working life, strengthening skills, occupational health care, indoor climate and workspaces, and occupational safety.

The results of our activities are reflected in increased well-being at workplaces and extended careers in society.
